Muslim students across the Ejigbo axis of Lagos came together on Friday, February 6, to commemorate this year’s World Hijab Day with a colourful awareness programme themed “Unity in Hijab.”
Although World Hijab Day is globally observed every February 1, organisers in Ejigbo shifted their celebration to Friday in order to accommodate their major audience — students — and ensure maximum participation.
World Hijab Day is set aside to create awareness about the significance of the hijab in Islam and to correct widespread misconceptions surrounding its use. For years, sections of the media and parts of the Western world have projected what Muslim women describe as misleading narratives about the hijab. Speakers at the event emphasized that Muslim women themselves must take the lead in reshaping the narrative through education, confidence, and unity.
Addressing participants, organisers noted that the hijab is not merely a piece of clothing, but a symbol of faith, modesty, identity, and obedience to Allah. They encouraged young Muslim girls to wear it proudly and to see it as a source of dignity rather than discrimination.
As part of activities marking the day, 12 students were presented with brand new hijabs. The beneficiaries were selected based on punctuality and their ability to correctly answer questions during an interactive session focused on the importance and virtues of hijab. The presentation of the hijabs was met with excitement and applause from attendees.
“Alhamdulillah, we are happy to see young girls embracing their identity with confidence,” one of the organisers said, expressing gratitude for the successful turnout.
The event concluded with a peaceful procession around the community, as participants marched in solidarity, reinforcing the message of unity and pride in wearing the hijab.
This year’s celebration not only strengthened awareness but also fostered a renewed sense of sisterhood among Muslim students in the Ejigbo community.
